RootsTech 2017: DAY FOUR, or some final thoughts

Posted on 12 February 2017 by Kate Challis

Today was another really successful and awesome day at RootsTech 2017. But I have to wake up in 3 hours to catch my plane, so this will have to be extremely short. The Cake Boss guy, Buddy Valastro, spoke in the morning. He was pretty long-winded and arrogant, in my opinion. But the guy sitting…

RootsTech 2017: DAY THREE, or Catholics and Mormons have a LOT in common

Posted on 11 February 2017 by Kate Challis

Today was both the first day that we made it to the keynote speaker (extremely inspiring and emotional! Of course the tears were flowing freely!) and also the first day I had a real, filling, substantial, delicious meal! You cannot get good Mexican food in my corner of Iowa; I miss real Mexican food from…

RootsTech 2017: DAY TWO

Posted on 10 February 2017 by Kate Challis

Today was awesome! We got up late and missed the keynote speaker because…well…I may have stayed up until 2 am talking with my sister in law. She has this magical gift of getting people to open up to her. She is an aesthetician/hair stylist, after all. Not like I am that short on words, anyway…haha…

RootsTech 2017: DAY ONE

Posted on 9 February 2017 by Kate Challis

It’s the end of my first day at RootsTech 2017. I think I’m going to starve. My sisters in law don’t believe in eating; they only believe in grazing. And dinner was at one of those places where they serve you tasty food but not enough of it. I spent the morning with my sister…

Radioactive Carps….aka RootsTech 2017: DAY ZERO

Posted on 8 February 2017 by Kate Challis

Well, Sondra and I are on our way to RootsTech 2017. This is the world’s largest genealogy conference, and it is going to be really interesting and awesome! Part of me sincerely wonders what I can possibly learn from this conference. Putting it like that sounds really snotty; I assure you, I’m painfully aware of my…

Kysucké Nové Mesto, Slovakia records on FamilySearch

Posted on 6 February 2017 by Kate Challis

So far I have looked at two Slovakian records, both on FamilySearch. And both of them were cataloged incorrectly. That is a lousy track record! I’m looking for a birth in 1891 for somebody who lived in Čambalovci, so they probably were baptized in Rudina, Nesluša, Kysucké Nové Mesto, etc. The Kysucké Nové Mesto records say…

Can Not Remember

Posted on 3 February 2017 by Kate Challis

This is so sad to me, that in one generation the name of his parents could be completely forgotten. This is a rare example of a Texas Czech death record having a hint to the village of origin – “Chaslaf”? But it is really sad that the mother’s name is forgotten. They should not be…

Motivation Monday: RootsTech thoughts, plans, dreams, fears, etc.

Posted on 30 January 2017 by Kate Challis

I will be going to RootsTech 2017 in a little over one week for the first time in my life. I have never done this before, though we used to live in Utah. But we had the excuse of being poor students. In 2009 I was working as a teacher at BYU StarTalk Arabic, the second…
